이 노래는 현재 125번 이상 커버되었으며, 이 중에 여러 제목의 한국어 번안곡들이 나왔다.

Rolf Løvland은 원래 아일랜드의 민요인 런던데리의 노래를 편곡하여 기악곡을 만들고 그 제목을 "Silent Story" (사일런트 스토리, 조용한 이야기)로 하려 했다. Rolf Løvland은 아일랜드의 소설가이자 작곡가인 Brendan Graham의 소설을 읽고 그에게 다가가 자신의 곡에 노랫말을 붙여달라 한 것이었다.

이 곡은 2002년에 출시된 Secret Garden의 앨범 [Once In A Red Moon]에 들어있으며, 아일랜드의 가수 브라이언 케네디(Brian Kennedy)가 불렀다. Brian Kennedy는 Secret Garden의 2002년 아시아 순회공연에 동행하려 했으나 병에 걸려 얀 베르네르 다니엘센(Jan Werner Danielsen)이 그 자리를 대신하였다. Jan Werner Danielsen은 이후 Secret Garden과 함께 같은 곡을 녹음했으나 출시되지는 않았다.

그후 팝페라 가수 Josh Groban(조쉬 글로반)이 리메이크해서 발표하면서 세계적으로 유명해진 명곡인데, Westlife(웨스트라이프)는 차분한 피아노 반주와 부드러운 목소리에 켈트족 전통악기인 백파이프 소리를 삽입하여 아일랜드의 슬프고 애절한 정서를 곁들였다. 그외 Becky Taylor, Celtic Woman, Connie Talbot 등이 리메이크해서 부르기도 하였다.

Westlife는 현재까지 활동중인 보컬그룹중 미국의 "Backstreet Boys ", 덴마크의 "Michael Learns To Rock"과 더불어 국내에서 가장 인기가 높은 보이밴드이다.

이들의 음악이 영국을 중심으로한 브리티쉬 팝(British Pop)의 전형을 띄고 있으며 보이밴드들의 장점이자 단점인 부드러운 멜로디 라인을 지니고 있기때문에, 자극적인 음악을 선호하는 미국의 음악적 분위기와 상치되는 면이 많아서 아시아나 유럽에서의 인기와 명성에 비한다면 미국 팝시장에서의 인지도는 상당히 떨어지는 그룹이기도 하다.

하지만, 1998년 결성 이후부터 지금까지 8년 넘는 세월동안 큰 굴곡없이 아시아와 유럽에서 정상의 인기를 누리고 있는 "Westlife"는 강하고 자극적인 비트의 미국적 팝뮤직과 힙합뮤직에 흥미를 잃은 30~40대 음악팬들에게는 편안한 안식처와도 같은 역할을 하고 있다.

대표곡인 "My Love"를 영국 UK 싱글차트 1위에 올리면서 "비틀즈(The Beatles)"가 지니고 있던 7연속 싱글 1위 기록과 동률을 이루게 되었고, 이후에 "Billy Joel"의 히트곡 "Uptown Girl"을 리메이크한 싱글로 1위를 기록하면서 연속으로 8장의 싱글이 연속으로 1위에 올라 "비틀즈"의 기록을 깨버렸다.

2005년 11월, 이들은 6집 앨범 [Face To Face]로 다시 돌아왔다. 어려움을 직시한다는 의미를 지닌 앨범 타이틀은 멤버의 탈퇴와 재정비, 그리고 멤버인 "Mark Feehily"의 커밍아웃 선언(동성 애인인 보이밴드 "V"의 멤버 "Kevin McDaid"와 약혼 발표도 했다)등으로 어수선해지고 다운된 자신들의 상황을 직시하겠다는 의지가 보인다. 사실상 3집 이후부터 대중 음악팬들과 조금씩 멀어진 느낌을 준 "Westlife"는 이번 앨범에서 리메이크곡인 첫번째 싱글 "You Raise Me Up"이 좋은 반응을 보이며 "Westlife"의 건재를 과시하고 있다.

또한 이곡은 국내 CCM 가수인 소향씨가 부르기도 했습니다.

동양가수로서는 드물게, 4옥타브 이상의 고음을 소화한다는 이유로 한국의'머라이어 캐리'라는

칭호도 받고 있다고 합니다.
